Once a Danger Zone. Now it’s a Tourist Spot– and Spirit Airlines Will Fly There

This week, Spirit Airlines announced it would add year-round service to Asheville and Greensboro in North Carolina beginning in early September from South Florida.

Starting Dec. 20, travelers can take daily direct flights between Fort Lauderdale and Cali, Colombia, the company Miramar-based company announced Wednesday.

Cali will be Spirit’s 17th destination in Latin America and 28th destination outside of the continental United States. The airline’s other Colombian destinations are Cartagena, Bogotá, Medellín and Armenia.

“After starting service there more than a decade ago, we continue to see amazing demand by our Guests,” said Mark Kopczak, Spirit Airlines’ vice president of Network Planning, in a statement.

Throughout 2018, Spirit has announced new flights from Florida to multiple U.S. destinations. Flights from FLL to Asheville, North Carolina, began Sept. 7. Starting Nov. 9, flights will run four days a week from FLL to Kansas City. From West Palm Beach, Spirit will fly to Detroit four times a week starting Dec. 21. From Fort Myers’ Southwest Florida International Airport, Spirit will operate a thrice weekly Philadelphia route on Dec. 13. The following day, the airline will begin service between Tampa and Philadelphia four times a week.

Cali gained international notoriety in the 1980s as the base of the Cali drug cartel and later, as a stronghold of the FARC revolution. But that was then. Today, its a popular spot for salsa dancing, nightlife and Afro-Caribbean culture.
